As a former waitress i can understand the stress that children (never-mind 9) put on a restaurant, especially when it is busy. you have to worry about them running into other customers, or you when you are carrying something. You have to worry about the mess left to clean after and hoping that their loud talking doesn't affect anyone else's meal. Although, all waiting staff bear in mind that children are innocent minds and they can't always control their excitement!! Pre-booking in any restaurant is a good idea. the waiting staff can then take a note of anything and be aware your kids are good to handle, therefore making you feel less intruded. However, I'd bet a good amount of money they were mostly in shock about the fact you have 9 kids!! sometimes these restaurants wouldn't get one child in at night! Their service response has most likely been lack of confidence or experience in working around children.

We took our children to Shu - all nine of them ranging in age from 6 months to 16 years old - for an early evening dinner a few months ago. I have to say that while we were well catered for in terms of the quality of the food, there was a palpable sense in the air from waiting staff that the sooner we left without incident the better. Our children are all very accustomed to eating out and thankfully the dinner passed off without event. However, I didn't relax at all (not like me!) and left with indigestion, having decided that I wouldn't be returning for a family meal. So based on that experience, I wouldn't recommend it for people with children at all. It is a lovely restaurant for couples and groups of adults though.
