Gate Inn reviews

The Monday night Mexican is awesome and Chris & Jan are great landlords. You wont find another pub like this in the area, trust me!

Extremely rude management after returning uncooked meals. Will not return and advise others to do the same. Review from ex regular.

The Dolmans We have been eating at the Gate for over 25 years and have always found the food and service 1st class. Over the years we have taken friends and family and have eaten both restaurant and bar meals and have never been disappointed with the quality of the food. I recommend the Tex-Mex steaks, Chilli and the Chicken Fajitas which are the best in the area. Whenever we visit we are treated as old friends by both management and staff who always go 'that extra mile' to ensure their customers fully enjoy their visit to the Gate. Please give the Gate a try as once you've been I guarantee you'll return.

Having travelled the world and eaten in many fine restaurants, I can safely say that this is one of my favourites. The food is consistently of a very high standard, the steak is always cooked to perfection and the choice on the menu is varied. The week night offers are seriously good value for money and consequently both the restaurant and bar are always cosy and buzzing. The staff are well trained and have always been friendly and welcoming. I am hoping to be taken here on valentine’s day by my partner- the menu looks divine!

I feel sad that you needed to complain about a member of your party being too hot. All that person needed to do was to step outside for a couple of minutes to cool off, the door to the front entrance is but five paces from the table you were sat at, obviously no consideration was given by you to other diners who would have been extremely cold had that door been left open. I will also say that in all the time that Gareth's partner has been part of the team, she's been courteous and helpful and I've never seen her be rude to anyone. In fact, the opposite is true, I have dietry needs and she'll accommodate my requested changes to the menu without question. There are times when the customer isn't always right.

We've been regulars at the gate for over twenty five years and in all that time I can put hand on heart and say that we've never had cause to make any major complaint about either the food or the service. We eat there regularly, sometimes twice a week and the meals are consistently good and very reasonably priced. In fact, I'd say that The Gate is the best eatery within miles, whether you choose the restaurant for that special occasion, book the conservatory for a family party or just to pop into the bar for lunch or an evening meal. I can't recommend The Gate highly enough.

How many times did you move? Did they build the fire after you moved to the table. I think they was good to you being moved so many times, just because you have been there lots of times give you the chance to moan and move. I'm surprised you had time to eat with all the musical chairs. Iv been going to the gate also for a long time, I suppose in the twenty years how many good reviews have you wrote?

It's a shame people review the VERY little negatives this pub has to offer. If everyone were to write a review, I can guarantee the positives will outweigh the negatives 1000 to 1.

WOW. The Gate is an excellent pub which offers a wide variety of dishes. It is our family's favourite restaurant and have never had a a bad word to say about the quality of the food and the excellent service the staff provide. With regards to the comment below, I was also dining in the bar on Saturday night and noticed how busy the Restaurant & Conservatory was. At this time of year, I find it hard to believe that you would book a table on a Saturday evening and not expect to have large parties dining??? The staff at the Gate have been more than accommodating for me and my family in the past and I fully respect their professionalism and manner. Top pub & restaurant with an excellent choice of dishes in my eye. I don't know anywhere else locally that can provide this quality and food and portion size for the price! The Tex Mex steak is a persobal favourite of mine. See you again over Christmas!

We have been using the gate for twenty years and last night we booked a table for six in the restaurant. A birthday party was set up next to us for about twenty or so people. When we trying to give our orders to the waitress we had to almost shout to get her to hear, not a problem, it was a birthday meal. We asked if there was any room in the bar or if room became available later we could move. We moved after we had eaten our starters, but the table we moved to was really too low for us to eat from, but we will still happy to move. A table then became available by the fire, so we moved again just as our meals came out. Consequently we did get very warm, one of our friends went and sat away from us as he was just too hot. So I opened the door slightly to let in a bit of fresh air, we noticed that the door had been closed again and so I opened it yet again. Again the door was closed and when I asked the person who closed it why, he said a woman had complained she was cold. I asked to speak to someone to explain that our friend was just too hot and had moved away so could we have the door slightly open. The person who came to our table was the partner of Gareth who runs the gate. She was hostile and rude! Her answer to our table was that I was known as a moaner and that I always moaned! I was mortified and embarassed in front of my wife and friends. Fortunately these friends have often accompanied us on our meals here many times and they were just as unaware of my moaning as I was. She kept going on about not being able to turn birthday groups away, this was not the issue it was the fact that we were just too hot, there are only so many layers of clothing you can discard! To be told you are known as a moaner and that I am booked in as a moaner is totally unacceptable and unprofessional. I said I would not be coming to the gate again and her answer was "That's up to you " and shrugged her shoulders. That young lady needs a crash course in customer relations!!!!!!!!!!!

I will start this review by telling you that I am so particular about where I eat out and this sometimes drives my family crazy! The Gate is one of my favourite places to eat. We have only ever had one issue with a steak that was not the best. The waitress told us that they had been trying different suppliers and quickly replaced the meal. She added that the chef is always grateful for feedback as the restaurant prides itself on its steak. The food is fabulous, the service fine and everywhere is clean. Highly recommend the chilli and the tex Mex. The fajitas are a little bland.

For more than 30 years this pub restaurant has been a wonderful eating place. The owners Chris and Jan spent time finding and developing the most diverse and wonderful menu, including their renowned Cajun Blackened steak. I absolutely hate to do this but, my family and I have just had the most embarrassing and distressful time at the Gate. Today, I ordered their Tex Mex with the steak rare. I have to say everything was cooked perfectly, but unfortunately the steak was full of Grissel and I was not able to cut it at all with the utensils provided. I complained and received a completely fresh plate, but again the steak was uncuttable. Again the waitress was perfectly respectful and totally professional, and even stated that recently there had been a couple of problems with the steaks. She immediately offered an alternative (totally acceptable) but, whilst waiting for this different meal, the chef, who appears to be the new manager, came out to the table in front of everyone with a platter of steak that he had cut up in the kitchen and said " there is nothing wrong with this steak, its like a piece of fillet" mmmmm. We were all gobsmacked, so we left totally embarrassed. To summarise, the food was cooked perfectly, the steak was grisly and not acceptable, but I would not blame the chef for a bad piece of meat. The issue is that I complained quietly to the waitress away from other customers, and this guy embarrassed my family and I by approaching me at the table, after I thought everything was sorted and fine. I will not go there again, and will certainly tell everyone I know in Stourbridge and Bromsgrove about my unfortunate experience. The issue here was the way a complaint was handled in the end, not even the quality of food itself as every place will have blips in quality every now and again.
