The Octagon reviews

By James T.

Not welcome if working class, after having my first drink I attempted to get to get the second round In when the bar man refused me as my work clothes ( I work for JLR in the green uniform) we're not presentable enough for the establishment. He then loudly compared me to the gentleman next to me who was wearing a suit saying once again I was too messy and under class to be there, after comparing me to two separate bar staff and one customer I was told he wasn't joking and I must leave until I improve my appearance. I found this highly insulting and some comments to be extremely patronising there were also comments about 'manual labour' and how it was not for that type of person.

My wife and I visited the Octagon on Thursday August 27 2015 and were impressed by the ambiance of the venue. The girl behind the bar gave us a warm welcome and went out of her way to explain the drinks on offer and the history of the building before it became a bar. The bar has only been opened for 5 weeks and we hope that, in due course, cocktails might be on offer. The Pizza oven has been installed but, unfortunately, not yet in operation as there is no Pizza chef yet. We think this cafe bar will be a great addition to Knowle and wish it great success.

Having read the some of the previous comments I was intrigued to find out what all the fuss was about, is it a cool new place or one that has double standards? The bar is light, fresh, the music is soft in the back ground yet loud enough to make you nod along with. The staff were smiley, helpful, chatty and knowledgeable about the drinks they were serving. The people in there were there to have a drink with some friends, a loved one or both and i have yet to find a place with an atmosphere such as this. This is a chilled out bar with a friendly mindset but its one that you go to because you want to spend your time in an environment that offers escapism from the normal bars, pubs and clubs. If this was in Solihull then it would be full of chavs, tracksuits and trainers with hoodies - people of Knowle, you are very lucky.

Being from Dorridge I was excited to see a fresh, contemporary restaurant and especially something scandi style so close to home. However, reading James' comments I'm reticent to visit if the restaurant is looking to discriminate customers on grounds of class and work wear. Not the best start if looking to attract down to earth local residents. Disappointed.

This is the coolest and friendliest "Scandinavian" bar ever. At last we have the best place outside London in Knowle! Feels like being on holiday with the beautiful people! Great selection of beers, wines......not cheap but worth it :-)

What's a brilliant alternative to the humdrum places in Knowle and Dorridge:) It's a cool and trendy bar, and must be a beer/ale drinkers paradise Not one of those but the prosecco Andy white wine served by happy smiling staff much appreciated Definitely recommend searching it out The other guy just needs to take his overalls off and sure he would enjoy it :-) Dave and Lucinda
