Varsity reviews

By Caroline Gail H.

Perfectly situated in the heart of Roath, on the busy Richmond Rd, Varsity is frequented by Cardiff’s ever-growing student population and is also ideal for those visiting or working in the Albany Road shopping district of Roath.

The Venue
Varsity offers different seating for different moods. For a more intimate experience you can get cosy in a booth or you can chill out on one of the sofas watching the match on the plasmas or on the projector screen. The decor is retro: sumptuous 70s-style wallpaper, brown shagpile carpets and large smoky mirrors. Smokers are provided with a shelter in the courtyard at the back and there is good wheelchair access.

The Atmosphere
Although part of a chain (there are over 40 Varsity bars throughout the UK), the Varsity in Roath has a friendly, informal and lively atmosphere. During the day you can drop in for breakfast or brunch and know that you’ll get a table. In the evening it gets a lot busier, the numerous special offers attract a large student fraternity, as well as hen nights and stag nights, and there are regular entertainment evenings laid on. If you think you’re likely to become a regular it’s well worth investing a £1 in a V Card which will entitle you to all the various deals.

The Food
Varsity delivers fantastic value for money, the food is good pub grub without tasting either microwaved or mass produced. Breakfast is served between 9am and 12noon and ranges from croissants and muffins, to a hearty full English for £3.95. Throughout the day and evening (food is served until 9pm) the menu offers a huge range of dishes. They run a two meals for £5.50 menu every day. Their pizzas are handmade and start at £4.95 for a Margherita to £6.95 for a Meat Feast. On Tuesdays all pizzas are 2-4-1.

The Drink
The Varsity Bar offers a huge range of real ales, bottled and draught beers, cocktails and shots. You can buy a Mojito pitcher for £9.95. With your V Card you can indulge in cheaper imbibing. On Thursday's there's a pound party, selected drinks are just a quid, and fishbowls are just £6.

The Last Word
For value for money, Varsity gets full marks. If, however, you’re looking for a traditional pub and a quiet corner this may not be for you. The fact that it’s part of a chain does mean that one Varsity is very much like another. Despite this, you can still pass a very pleasant few hours during the day, reading the papers, using their in-house wi-fi connection and enjoying the great deals on food and drink.
