A classic little indie student nightclub but don't let its tiny dimensions and cheap drinks fool you. This place has hosted some of Britain's biggest bands.
In looks the Liquid Room is best described as a student club and it's basically been designed for two things - drinking and dancing. It's always packed on student night which is Wednesday and can be almost empty on other nights.
It's reasonably small, located in an old Victorian building. There are two levels, an outdoor section for the smokers and a stage for the DJ. As you go down a flight of stairs into the ground floor you'll find the dancefloor and the main bar. This fills up very quickly when it's busy so it's usually a good idea to arrive early or get a few drinks at a time.
Venture upstairs if you want to sit down and buy a few drinks from the smaller, and usually less crowded, bar. There's also a range of tables and seats as well as a balcony looking over the dancefloor so it is easy to find your friends if you lose them. The outside area is excellent not only for smokers but people who want some fresh air or a chat. The DJ booth is found just above the dancefloor and the DJs are open to requests.
Liquid Room changes depending on the night. Wednesdays are very much student based and the atmosphere is laid back and enjoyable. However, on non-student nights it can be quiet with people almost scattered around the club. At weekends the late twenties crowd take over.
It should be noted that Liquid Room can sometimes get crowded and it's not uncommon to see a few scuffles on the dancefloor but the bouncers are quick to sort things out. And if, after a few beers, you're a bit of a trouble-maker then watch out. Bouncers are often inside the club so it's likely you're being watched.
They're also quite strict because at weekends and student nights their job becomes all about crowd control rather than being a welcoming committee.
Liquid Room is traditionally known for being an indie or rock music venue. However it has hosted acts such as the Smashing Pumpkins, Stereophonics, Magic Numbers and the Kaiser Chiefs . Such nights can be excellent fun as the club's smaller size creates an intimate feel to the performance. Wednesday night is indie night, otherwise known as student night due to the drinks offers. Other weekday nights sometimes have one-off theme nights and take on another music genre. These usually have some sort of drinks promotions and are advertised outside the club for a few days before the night.
Being a student nightclub there are often drinks promotions. Wednesday nights are the best for such deals as it is reduced entry for students and £1.50 drinks. On other weekdays the offers relate to specific drinks.
