Sneaky Pete’s attracts a music-loving party crowd and is part of the underbelly of Edinburgh's nightlife.
Located in the highly trendy stretch of small bars and clubs that line Edinburgh's Cowgate is this tiny but pumping nightclub. From the outside, Pete's (as it is affectionately known) is unimpressive and is only recognisable by the skinny jean and trilby clad crowd pouring out of its single door into the dark and dingy street.
Sneaky Pete's has one smallish bar towards the front, a small L-shaped couch area and a fairly modestly sized dance floor. Despite these rather unappealing descriptions, Pete's is one of the best alternative nights out in Edinburgh. A large projector by the dance floor adds to the intimate rave/hard rock atmosphere of this small but perfectly formed club. Yes, the bathrooms do have a lingering nasty smell, but the music and crowd make up for this venue's dingy downfalls.
The most crowded nights are Thursdays for italoBLACK, a night dedicated to Italo disco. On nights like these it is free entry with drink promos throughout the night. Other nights concentrate on electro, drum and bass and indie rock.
Drawn by the intense club nights and promise of an in-the-know crowd, the clientele of Pete's are mostly clued up. An interesting collection of ravers, punks, indie kids and mods, this small club is often packed full of a crowd who wouldn't look out of place in the halls of an art school. It can feel cliquey at times, but overall each group keep to themselves, without too much of a condescending vibe. The bar staff are fairly unfriendly, but only because they are worked to the core with an ever present mass of customers at the limited bar area.
It’s strictly bottles and spirits for the customers here. There is an average selection of rums, whiskeys and vodkas, most of which are ordered by the double. The bottle bar ranges from Corona to the pear cider Kopparberg. Pete's is extraordinarily well priced, catering to the poor student and music scene crowd. A round of beers and spirits is easy on the pocket and served with lightening speed. All drinks must be consumed inside or left in a line at the door if you go outside for a cigarette break.
The Last Word
Not for the faint hearted, Pete's is fast paced and frenetic. What are the makings of a great night out for some, maybe hell for others. Make sure you know what you’re letting yourself in for before heading down.
