Larkin's Bar reviews

Went on Sunday with some friends for a meal and then some drinks. First impressions good and I had heard good things about the place. The starter platters were quite nice however the main meals were awful. I ordered the chorizo and mushroom risotto which was so stodgy and creamy it was inedible. The chorizo was thin slices of pepperoni which you couldn't taste through all the cream. The lasagne was dry and had obviously been reheated. The chicken stroganoff was made with processed cubes of chicken that tasted of nothing. Even the chips looked like they had been reheated. Very disappointing and worse not once either during the meal, when clearing the plates or when paying did anyone ask how the meal had been. I guess they just don't care. In times like these only businesses that try hard will succeed and this is not one of them. By all means go for a drink, atmosphere was nice but just don't eat there!

My partner and I went 14 Feb 2012. We've been before and absolutely raved about the food especially the Duck salad so were really looking forward to it. Duck salad is off the menu but I was pleased to see the return of Chicken Stroganoff which I have had before and was so delicious I didn't want to stop eating :) We opted for the Valentine special which was a sharing platter then a main from a choice of a few. My memory is playing up but I think it was £18 for two of us. We ordered the meat platter then a house special burger and my old fav Chicken Stroganoff. Meat platter was great but far too filling to serve as a starter. Maybe would have been better to serve a small starter and offer a dessert instead as the meat platter is actually a main meal. We could have done with half an hour to get over the starter!! Got a sausage each, mincemeat kebabs and chicken kebabs with dips and garlic bread. When the mains arrived we should have sent them back as the chunky chips served with both mains were burnt and quite greasy but we wanted it to be a nice problem-free night so didn't complain. The burger was good with bacon and cheese and what looked like a homemade breadcake. The Chicken Stroganoff was the main dissapointment. The sauce was lacking something from my original experiences - it used to be really delicious. And the chicken tasted like pre-cooked chicken (like when you make a curry out of Turkey leftovers - it just is completely different from the texture of freshly cooked breast) but it could have been that it had been cooking far too long. The meal was not horrible and was ok but a bit dissapointing compared to our first couple of visits to Larkins. And to add insult to injury the beer was warm :(
