With real snow, a Santa's grotto, a camel procession and all manner of seasonal entertainment, the switching on of the Chelsea Christmas lights is bound to be a highlight of the early festive season. Seasonal affair Casting Duke of York Square in a festive glow, the Chelsea Christmas lights aim to give everyone a dose of seasonal bonhomie. Do your Christmas shopping under the lights, take the kids along to the free Santa's grotto and enjoy a season of goodwill and cheer in the countdown to Christmas 2014. Switching on event The switching on ceremony for the 2014 Chelsea Christmas lights is bound to be a popular event, with a programme of live entertainment and fun for all ages. Activities taking place throughout the day in the run up to the turning on of the lights include a North Pole themed Santa's grotto, a procession of real camels and even a magical Christmas post-box. Free events This year, there's also free face painting and cookie decorating for kids, as well as giveaways of free candyfloss, toffee apples and popcorn from Victorian style carts on Duke of York Square. The traditional lights switch on celebration stars real-life reindeer, elves, and Victorian carts serving roasted chestnuts too. Family carol service A family carol service at the Duke of York Square will be adding a traditional touch to the proceedings on the day of the Christmas lights switch on. The service will be accompanied by minced pies and mulled wine, and a cracking choir singing a chorus of festive favourites to add to the magical atmosphere. The switching on of the Chelsea Christmas lights takes place on Saturday 8th November 2014. The day of free activities takes place from 3pm and the switch on takes place at 5.30pm. Admission to the switch on festivities is free. The grotto will be open until the 24th December and the lights will remain in place until the first week of January 2015.
