A stunning exhibition of Japanese fashion at Barbican Art Gallery is sure to entrance any keen fashion fans in the capital as the avant garde collection opens to the public. Japanese Fashion Barbican Art Gallery is playing host to the very first exhibition of its kind over 2010 and 2011 as the Japanese Fashion exhibition goes on show there. Not only the first of its kind in Britain, but also in Europe too, this is your chance to get up close and personal with some of the most stylish, peculiar and unusual avant garden Japanese fashion since the 1980s. Artistic influence Japanese designers had a huge impact on the fashion world in the late 20th century and since then, they have become a tour de force of design. As names such as Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto redefined how fashion worked, looked and was made, they established themselves as permanent favourites in both the fashion and the art industry. On show in the exhibition of Japanese fashion at Barbican Art Gallery you can see key pieces from their collections and see just how influential their work was to become. Fashion as art Exploring the unique Japanese sensibility of design and their artistic fashion ethic, the Japanese Fashion exhibition examines the idea of beauty within clothing in its own right. With their simplfied decoration, a completely unfinished look, or severe deconstruction, the clothes on show in Japanese Fashion at Barbican exemplify the aesthetic of Iki, which crosses the boundaries between sacred and worldly, with both modern and traditional techniques to create the garment. Designers on show As well as featuring a whole gammut of brilliant Japanese designer the exhibition was also curated by Japanese fashion historian Akkio Fukai, who is the director of the famous Kyoto Costume Institute in Japan. Bringing together work from the likes of Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto, Japanese Fashion at Barbican Art Gallery also features clothing created by the legendary Rei Kawakubo of the Comme des Garcons label. Having been a huge influence on contemporary fashion, particularly in Europe, there are sure to be many fashionistas and young designers in London keen to see her work first hand. Also on show in the exhibition is Junya Watanabe, who is Kawakubo's couturier protege. The exhibition of Japanese Fashion at Barbican Art Gallery takes place from Friday 15th October 2010 - Sunday 6th February 2011. The opening hours are 11am - 8pm daily, excluding Tuesday and Wednesday, when the gallery shuts at 6pm, and late night Thursdays until 10pm.
