Doll maker Samuel Mullins is devastated by the death of his beloved daughter Annabelle. He seals her bedroom and wallows in grief along with his wife, Esther. Twelve years later, a local orphanage is forced to close and Samuel and his wife offer temporary refuge to Sister Charlotte and her six young wards including Janice, who has been struck down by polio. While the other children play outside, Janice is consigned to the house and she succumbs to curiosity, exploring Annabelle's room.
