Following the suicide of his wife, brilliant psychologist David Callaway elects to move his entire life to the outskirts of New York, where he and his 11-year-old daughter Emily can begin afresh. The girl is deeply traumatized by her mother's passing and seeks solace in the invention of an imaginary friend called Charlie. When Emily begins blaming Charlie for the death of the family cat and angry graffiti on the bathroom wall, David fears he is losing his child too. Little does he realise the terrifying truth.
