Middle-aged poet Orpheus witnesses the death of young rival Cegeste outside of a regular cafe haunt. Orpheus and the dead man are spirited away by a princess, who claims to be death. Together with her chauffeur Heurtebise, she shepherds Cegeste towards the afterlife. Orpheus returns to the world of the living where he becomes obsessed with the princess, much to the consternation of his wife Eurydice. When Eurydice dies, Orpheus travels back to the Underworld to untangle his knotted emotions.
