To mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Victor de Sabata, Mario Martone directs Umberto Giordano's impassioned opera in four acts, broadcast live from the historic Teatro alla Scala opera house in Milan. There is widespread rioting across Paris on the eve of the French Revolution but the nobility is blissfully oblivious to storm clouds on the horizon. The Countess of Coigny throws a lavish party at her castle for privileged friends including the dashing poet Andrea Chenier.
