This Covent Garden takeaway is perfect for something different for lunchtime – it puts chain sandwich shops to shame.
Inspired by a London couple’s honeymoon in Australia, Abokado is an inventive lunch spot that serves quick, healthy and creative food. The decor is minimal, with metal fixtures and a colour theme of mostly beige and (what else?) avocado. There are only a few seats inside and a couple of tables outdoors in good weather, so it’s best to just grab and go.
Abokado is more of a takeaway than a restaurant, even with the scattered seating. Customers are mostly local office workers eager to get a health food fix, and the staff are always friendly and smiling.
The food at Abokado is a delicious mix of Eastern and Western flavours – everything from teriyaki salmon to crayfish and lime to falafel are mixed together with juicy lettuce leaves and chewy glass noodles. The edamame is such a perfect combination of sweet and salty that you’ll eat your way through the whole lot before you know it. Abokado’s claim to fame, however, is its sushi, which somehow manages to be some of the freshest and cheapest in London.
If you’re in the mood for something lighter then a typical doorstop sandwich, their wraps are packed full of fillings like the slightly spicy Thai green chicken and fresh tuna salad – if you can’t decide, you can mix and match. For something different check out the sushi wraps: normal wrap fillings like sweet chilli chicken and carrot, avocado and ginger packed into a giant sushi roll.
There’s no alcohol on Abokado’s menu (it doesn’t exactly go with the whole health kick) but you can quench your thirst on a variety of juices, including fresh squeezed orange, apple and carrot. The fruit smoothies are delicious – not too thick and not filled with chunky bits of ice, either.
The Last Word
Leave the bland sandwich in your office fridge and try something new at the cute and creative Abokado.
