Bar Story reviews

By Andrew M.

Bar Story does some absolutely superb food. The decor is lovely too and the staff attentive but not overly so.

I really recommend Bar Story as somewhere to meet with friends or for a romantic meal.

I can't believe there are no more recent reviews on this site!! Bar Story is the ultimate after work drinking venue. The atmosphere here is great; it's chilled out, funky, the crowd is lovely, and the service is outstanding - always with a smile, and a cheeky wink! The cocktails here must be one of London's best kept secrets as they are fabulous and really well-priced as a bonus! I've always had a great night here and will visit again and again!

Bar Story now has the Sassoon Gallery at the back with live DJs on occasion, film nights for amateur videographers, happy hour (buy one get one free cocktails 6-8 pm daily) and an outdoor area sitting around tables made of concrete slabs or old (cleaned) railway sleepers! Bar Story is a great night out particularly as it's open till late.

An eccentric, lovely looking and timely addition to the area, this venue offers an impressively wide range of bottled beers and good value wines. As a restaurant the food is mod-med basic but decent (and amusingly subject to the ever-changing vagaries of the eclectic clientele, the whims of the owner and chef(s) and the stock levels of the fridge).

An extremely friendly and vibey place to eat and drink - especially on warm nights when the large front garden area with its palm trees can make Peckham feel almost Balearic (and that's not something that SE15 is often accused of). Also look out for live music on Mondays and DJs now and then, as and when. Licensed till 12.

A pre-drink haven that could battle the big boys easily if it had a late licence.

The Venue
Have you read the news lately? Peckham Rye is officially the 'new Dalston'. That's right, London's trendy quarter has slithered round to the previously-revered south east and it's places like Bar Story that are leading the movement. Hidden beneath the sprawling landscape of nail bars, afro hair salons and fishmongers, a revolution is taking place - specifically under Peckham Rye railway station's dilapidated-looking arches. With a DIY feel, it would be easy to think that Bar Story was a pop up but its long-standing history in the area and many a return customer proves the bar's staying power.

The Atmosphere
SE15's association with the party scene has traditionally been secret warehouse raves and word-of-mouth gatherings, but with the upturn of the area they're now moving out from the underground and fully into the mainstream consciousness. As relaxed as it is frivolous, any given weekend at Bar Story will see swathes of people, drink in hand, either dancing inside or collecting in the bar's accommodating front patio. Fridays and Saturdays have a distinct ready-for-the-weekend vibe whereas weekdays offer up one of the best gathering haunts in local surrounds. Be warned however, the residential location means that last orders are at 10pm.

The Food
With such an established reputation for its incredible drinks menu, Bar Story doesn't need to concentrate on food. However, that's not stopping them. The ever-changing menu provides everything from Sunday roasts to Canteen Mondays with spaghetti bolognese, bubble and squeak, curry and more, to high quality, quick and reasonably priced pizzas on Friday and Saturday evenings. While it may not be the venue's mainstay, the food is a welcome addition that makes it an all-rounder.

The Drink
The pièce de résistance for this local gem has to be its extensive cocktail menu. From long drinks to short drinks to mixed shots and beyond, no ice cube is left unturned on their chalkboard of choices - which aptly fills the length of the bar. Cocktail novices will likely recognise the Long Island Ice Tea and the Bloody Mary, but it's the connoisseurs who will get a kick out of the wild and wonderful Bar Story concoctions. For those less partial to sugar and sprig in their drink, bottled lagers and wines are still available.

The Last Word
There's no denying that Bar Story has got it very right in terms of drinks, food and pricing, but with last orders coming in at 10pm you're almost always guaranteed to want a bit more.
