Earlier this year, my partner and I went to a wedding reception at the Blue Lion. It was so lovely that we immediately decided to hire it for a party we were planning in November to mark a couple of big birthdays. Cheryl, the manager, proved to be a gem: she was very approachable, full of useful advice about food and drink, and generally made the whole process extremely pain-free, not just in the run-up to the party but on the night itself.
The pub is beautiful and has a lovely atmosphere. It's spacious without feeling intimidating, and the layout means you can have several kinds of party going on at the same time - groups chatting around tables at the front of the pub, people playing music or dancing in the back and a few little nooks and crannies here and there for more intimate conversations. There's even a pool table, which kept the under-15s happy when we were there.
The food is excellent. We had a selection of sharing platters (the choice is meat, seafood, vegetarian and vegan) as well as a buffet. Being something of a worrier, I was concerned that we might have under-ordered, but in fact the servings were so generous that we ended up having some left over (I'm hoping the bar staff took at least some of it home with them). In another example of Cheryl's accommodating approach, she also made it clear that the kitchen could be kept open until 10pm in case any of our guests did want to order individual meals.
For a pub that is pretty central - just minutes from Chancery Lane - the minimum spend is very reasonable. I recommend it very highly indeed. In fact, I'm just trying to think of an excuse to have another big party.
