Churchill Bar and Terrace reviews

By Tonique C.

Good but a little pretentious!

It is 5:01pm and that can only mean one thing, it is the end of the day, and work is finally over! Now it is time to unwind with one of my favourite drink choices- A Strawberry Daiquiri:) On this occasion, I chose to go to the Churchill lounge and Terrace, as I am forever in love with the things of the past and this Lounge bar definitely emphasises this. ?If I am drinking, and then I am definitely eating! After many choices, I chose the Oysters (Divine!). The service was efficient, and the waiters gave some good recommendations- One which was a watermelon-based shot! Which you may regret in the morning, especially if have an 8:30am start! But hey, what’s the point of life if you are not living ;) Unfortunately we did not dine in the Terrace, has it was extremely cold and despite the heating, we opted to sit inside. However, if you are a smoker, and immune to cold weather, then dining outside is perfect for you.

Just a stone’s throw from Bond Street, this stylish bar is the ultimate watering hole for gin lovers.

The Venue
On the corner of Portman Square, Hyatt Recency’s new bar and terrace is just a few minute’s walk from Marble Arch, Hyde Park and Oxford Street. The swanky exterior comes complete with fancy doorman and inside the friendly and attentive staff are as stylishly dressed as the interior.

The Churchill is timeless and traditional, with book-clad walls, high-backed armchairs and roaring fires, yet it feels polished and contemporary. The bar has an intimate feel with a few clusters of plush sofas set around shiny table tops. The design is all about attention to detail, the idea being that the Hyatt has created a bar where a young Winston Churchill himself would like to while away the hours. You can even share a drink with the man himself – there’s a life-sized bronze statue of him ‘in conversation’ on the heated terrace.

The Atmosphere
The Churchill’s drinkers are a mixture of post-work drink tipplers, hotel guests and shoppers in need of a place to rest their weary legs after pounding the pavements of nearby Oxford Street. But with cosy corners and mellow music that’s just the right level to chat over, it’s the perfect place for a date or a catch-up with friends.

The Food
You won’t find pork scratchings or Bombay mix at The Churchill. But while this bar doesn’t hand out typical snacks, they do offer plenty of more unusual nibbles to go with your drinks - from tiny steak tartare to sophisticated Scotch eggs with perfectly cooked runny centres.

The Drink
Though the food is fancy, at The Churchill the drinks are really where it’s at. The bar have developed their own gin – Churchill Craft Gin – which makes up a part of most of their cleverly concocted cocktails.

The G A & P – a twist on the classic G&T - will please any gin lover, while Trafalgar Sour – a clever flavour combination of gin and gooseberry – and Clover Club are must-tries that capture classic British flavours.

The Last Word
The Churchill offers great cocktails and a sophisticated, laid-back atmosphere just minutes from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street.
