Enoteca Super Tuscan reviews

By Barry K.

Popped in here during the 'soft-opening' period in January and I have to say they seemed to have it pretty well sorted from the off! Had some tasty appetizers - arancini (breadcrumbed and fried meat and rice balls) and penelle (extremely more-ish crisp type thingies made from chickpeas) - and a delicious veal stew for main. Very reasonable prices (£3-5 for starters/ appetizers, £10-ish for mains) and some very drinkable Italian wines. We'll definitely be back.

This delightful restaurant and bar is an outpost of authentic Italian cuisine and wines, hidden away in a City backstreet.

The Venue
Enoteca Super Tuscan is an Italian wine bar and restaurant located at the entrance of Artillery Passage, a secluded, narrow street just off Bishopsgate and a short walk from Liverpool Street Station. Space is tight outside, so seating is limited to a few wrought-iron tables, but inside the décor plays up to the busy taverna feel perfectly, with more than a touch of class. The area nearest the large front window consists of several marble-topped tables for two, backed by stylish black panels on brick walls, while towards the back of the room several booths of plush leather are available for larger groups. The bar, situated at the far left-hand side of the room and surrounded by high stools, is equally easy on the eye, made of mottled wood and packed to the rafters with wine bottles, casks, glasses and mementos. The effect, combined with sparse decoration and soft lighting, is one of muted sophistication and cool.

The Atmosphere
A deserving favourite among in-the-know City-goers, Enoteca Super Tuscan tends to be hot property during its opening hours of 12-3pm and 5.30-10pm weekdays. Despite this, the atmosphere is usually fairly sedate, albeit friendly and comfortable, with the venue serving as a much-needed antidote to the hectic Bishopsgate crowds outside. The staff are obviously passionate about their work, and this contagious vibrancy translates into a charming, authentic City getaway.

The Food
With an emphasis on carefully-sourced, simply-prepared ingredients, the menu at Enoteca draws on a rich background of Italian cuisine, at very reasonable prices. A wide variety of sample-size starters (£3-£5) and ciabatta sandwiches (£6-£8) gives way to a wealth of pasta, meat and fish-based mains (£8-£20), including Tuscan veal stew and sumptuous gnocchi al pesto, as well as sizeable antipasti sharing platters (£10-£14 for two people, £20-£24 for four). A genuine taste of Italy in the heart of the City.

The Drink
The exemplary food is backed up by a rich and ever-changing list of Italian wines, with average prices ranging between £3.50-£6 per glass, or £18-£40 per bottle (excluding the “Super Tuscan” vintages, kept in the cellar for special occasions!). A number of other beverages are available at the bar at standard City prices, and champagnes and prosecco (£4.50 a glass) are also on hand, but wine is the raison d’être at Enoteca, with expert advice on hand from the ever-helpful staff.

The Last Word
The genuine article - Enoteca Super Tuscan lives up to its name with gourmet Italian food and a sensational cellar.
