Palmyra reviews

By Stuart C.

I had dinner at this restaurant on a Friday night with a couple of friends and the experience was abysmal. To give readers an understanding of our typical taste preferences, the preference is certainly for Indian and South Asian food. If you like spicy food with texture and variety, the Lebanese cuisine here is not for you. The food at the Palmyra is devoid of flavour and incredibly bland. The starters we had were meant to be spicy potatoes and lamb pastries. The potatoes were tasteless and the lamb pastries were tiny with next to nothing in terms of lamb filling. The portions for both starters were ridiculously small. For mains, we had lamb cutlets and mixed grills. Again, the proportions were tiny and the food was tasteless. It was presented very well and at least looked appetising. The mixed grill cost 14 pounds-- that in itself is incredible considering the portions and quality of food. My local pub serves a mixed grill which is infinitely better than Palmyra. The lamb cutlets and lamb kebabs were both badly under cooked. On the plus side, the dishes looked appetising and the staff were friendly. The restaurant is very small and feels quite cosy. In summary, I would never dine here again and this will be my last experience of eating Lebanese and Arab/Middle Eastern food. Unbelievably bland. I cannot stress this enough.

Went there last night for some nice Lebanese food and it was quite good. The service was good. the waiter recommended the Humus which turned out to be excellent.! The atmosphere was a bit damp and no music. We enjoyed the food but would not recommend the so called "homemade chips" or the mango juice (tasted like cheap cordial). We had several hot and cold mezzes and the portions were of decent size and enough to go around three of us and have left overs.

Having read the reviews, my friends and I were all quite excited about eating here. What a let down. Service was half-hearted to say the least. No enthusiasm, no personal recommendations, no desire to make you want to be adventurous with the dishes. When compared to a recent meal at Cote in Richmond, which was stunning - both food & service - Palmyra was worse than a school canteen. The starters were OK, giving what we presumed to be a taste of the main courses. Wrong. The house chicken special was bland beyond belief, a real tasteless, boil-in-the-bag concoction that left many plates half-full. Deserts were uninspired as well. Can I recommend it? No. Would we go back again? Only if 'under new management.'
