Somerset House information

Somerset House is a spectacular Neo-classical building in the heart of London, sitting between the Strand and the River Thames. During summer months 55 fountains dance in the courtyard, and in winter you can skate on London's favourite ice rink. Somerset House also hosts open-air concerts and films, contemporary art and design exhibitions, family workshops and free guided tours of spaces usually hidden to visitors.

Somerset House reviews

My husband and I spent NYE at Somerset House. Very heavy on security staff especially considering that the venue felt virtually empty the entire evening. It was technically sold out apparently, with tickets at £50-60 each. No atmosphere whatsoever though, sadly. The hour on the ice was pleasant, following which we were handed half bottles of warmish champagne with straws. Half the security staff were completely unaware that glass bottles were being handed out by organisers so we were repeatedly stopped and questioned. Security were constantly eye balling the plastic flutes obtained by some patrons which further added to the feeling of unease. Not a festive atmosphere by any stretch. Bar staff refused to supply plastic cups or glasses to us, and were quite rude when it was requested (drinking champers from a bottle with a straw wasn't particularly enjoyable). Long, queues for mediocre food, the only saving grace was a short performance by costumed ice skaters - though far too brief. What a shame. Very poor value as far as NYE events go.

Very disappointed in this 'super Christmas market'. I don't feel that I found anything they advertised, with the exception of the Poundshop, which did not live up to the hype either. So far, I've visted almost every market advertised, and the Hyde Park fair/market is by far the best. Do not feel that this market at the Somerset House was worth paying a fee to get into at all- Not impressed!
