I get my regular Japanese fix here..It is owned by two Croatian brothers who were trained for 15 years at a Japanese restaurant in Finchley.
Their Japanese and Chinese wives who help at the restaurant are friendly and chatty. I lived in Japan for 6 years and speak the language.
This place is one of the few opened on Sundays..and it is often packed with Japanese families and kids when their mums get a rest from cooking. Reservation is recommended especially for dinner.
The ingredients are fresh and the dashi stock they use for their miso soup and noodle soup is light and flavourful..which is the acid test for a good family restaurant.
Love their lunch menu , especially the Yakitori lunch which is excellent value..comes complete with a salad and miso soup. The skewers of chicken, asparagus and a meat rolled with bacon (my favourite) are grilled to perfection and not all gooey with heavy sticky sauce.
The noodles , Tempura Udon or their Special house udon soup are warming, in a light broth that is not heavy and rich in dashi (tuna flakes) flavour. It brings home all the memories of Japan on a cold wintry day when I sip on this broth and slurp up the smooth udon..
My kids love the Agedashi toufu ..lightly fried cubes of soft toufu in a batter and dipped in a light dashi sauce garnished with finely cut spring onion and ground ginger and radish..a dish I could never master and prefer eating at a good restaurant like Tosa..
I go there often and we were probably one of their first loyal clients..mainly because I want to make sure they do well and are around for good to satisfy my Japanese food urges...
I bring lots of my Japanese friends there and the overall consensus is it is simple family dishes cooked with care and attention to detail.
