Previously a Firkin pub, Scream have now taken over this haven for games, grub and indie students.
Formerly a cinema, the Grosvenor Picture House, and now owned by student pub chain Scream, The Footage is housed in an amazing building. With its green and white facade and grand tiled entrance, you go inside to find a big, dark pub strewn with low sofas, tables and chairs, all in sections.
There’s a couple of pool tables at the back and a raised area with three more tables as well as low sofas which are far too comfy to think about going back for that next lecture. It’s a complete students’ playground (its smack bang in the middle of the University-land of Oxford Road) and there are the regulation fruit, quiz and pinball machines.
The music can be anything from Guns’n’Roses to Kylie and the bar’s festooned with fairy lights. But it’s only when you look up do you realise how big it is. The large balcony area above is accessed via some stairs which are lined with beautifully tiled walls and the area itself has its own with private alcoves, a highly decorated red and gold ceiling above, as well as a viewing area down on proceedings below.
It’s got a rock slant and you’ll find 28-inch-waisted indie guys in skinny trousers and neckties alongside girls in studded belts and similarly slinky attire. It gets busy at the weekend. Dancing on the tables is common as is the shocking sight of the future of the NHS (medical students) in full attire on their last stop of a mammoth bar crawl.
The Food and Drink
On tap there’s the usual selection of lagers such as Grolsch, Carlsberg, Carling, Heineken and Stella, plus Weston’s organic cider and Old Rose cider. And in bottles there’s Budweiser, Beck’s, Coors, Magner’s, Bulmer’s and Brothers pear and strawberry cider, as well as Smirnoff Ice and WKD. A cocktails pitcher is £8.50. Food is served till 9pm and includes cheap treats, such as a spicy beef chilli burger for £4.95.
The Last Word
A stoodent paradise with cheap booze, food and lots of games.
