I go here for sunday lunch every other week, but last week I was very dispointed as my roast potatoes were digusting as deep fried ( lazy chef ) our yorkshires were flat and rock hard too ( come on Chef give us some fresh homemade puffy ones with the wow factor ) , I also heard a customer complain but nothing was done , that was very sad to see, I also saw the landlady sit on a table counting money and discussing staff cover, iv not come for lunch to hear work matters, giving the imprestion that customers were her last concern, if she looked she would have seen how long we had been waiting to be served! it took forever to get further drinks , please dont become complacent , no everyone complains at the time as we dont want the emabarasment, but as customers we do spread the word. I have commited to a group booking this week and I am praying the standards have improved as i have been raving about the place to those that I am taking and whom have not been before, please no deep fried potatoes or pre cooked to far in advance flat hard yorkshires. On a positive, the lady behind the bar provided a friendly and excllent service as it should be.

Dear Bookmark I was the Restaurant Manger on duty this day. The sheer volume of customers that day slowed down service more than we would have liked. However, the length of time you waited for your meal was unacceptable. Therefor an apology and a full refund was given. You also ate the meal and cleared your plates. On this occasion i fell we did as much as we could under the circumstance.

I visited the Sportsmans Rest recently and was pleased at first to see that it was connected with the Farmer's Arms where I have eaten on many occasions and had excellent service and food. However my pleasure soon turned to dismay when we were kept waiting for nearly 1hr 30 mins for our food. We were meeting up with others who arrived after us but had their food long before us, but even they were unhappy with their orders, not receiving the correct meals and one meal not very hot. The staff seemed extremely disorganised.

We are regulars to the Sportsman and I can honestly say we have never been disappointed with our visits. You may wait a little longer but this is not a fast food joint and when the food arrives it is always hot and home cooked. We had a group of 18 of us yesterday for a joint birthday, the pub was busy but the food all arrived out together, all hot and no one was disappointed. As for the previous comments about the Land Lady as they have a sister pub in St Brides she is always on the go and is always pleasant and making sure her staff are doing what they should be.. if your think shall we visit, then I would give it a go I don't think they will disappoint you

Hated hated hated. Discusting language from a fat horrible lady. Will not be returning! Shut it down or get new management.

We're not local to the area but we thought we'd try somewhere out in the countryside. We were not disappointed, what a warm friendly welcome not like some pubs were the villagers turn there heads in disgust. Great home made home at very reasonable pricess. The staff were very friendly, attentive and numerous towards us city slickers. We will be returning very soon.

Get a life and a sense of humor We love this pub and return regularly due to the welcoming nature of the owners

My wife and me regularly eat a mid week lunch at The Sportsman's The food is good, honest, home cooked fare, and Sandra - the landlady - is both welcoming and at ease with her clientele. We can fully recommend the quality of food and the service, and will continue to frequent a venue where we are welcomed and well served.

In response to this individual's review I have to very strongly disagree with their appraisal of the hostess. The lady concerned is gregarious. passionate and professional. Life, all too frequently, lacks a sense of humour and the lady in question has an extraordinary capacity to make people smile with her infectious sense of irony and fun. All too frequently I enter eateries to be greeted by inadequate, ill mannered and inane individuals. The Sportman's Rest offers a personal welcome with a genuine desire by all staff to satisfy customers. Life can be characterised by what I consider to be nothing more than the adequate. Having recently visited the pub, and now being a regular customer, I have nothing but praise for staff, service and food in the pursuit of excellence. Ladies and gentlemen who visit this site I urge you to visit the Sportman's Rest and ignore the sanctimonious commentary of those who have no sense of humour! If you enjoy a truly personal experience, complemented by excellent food and service, the Sportsman's Rest is an ideal venue with an ideal hostess, ideal staff and ideal food.

I visited this restaurant with my husband recently and I can honestly say that I will not be returning. The food was good but the service was awful. On entering we were greeted by a very loud woman shouting to the bar tender "victim alert". The very same woman clearly likes the sound of her own voice, as that's pretty much all we heard through our meals and like another review commented on, it was at sometimes vile language from herself and a young girl. As for the food it was good, homemade just as food should be. Its a shame because its a lovley pub in a lovley location but the landlady (I'm guessing) is rude and obviously does not care. New management and I think this place could be a little gem.

We entered the pub first time to what seemed a lovely place to have a meal. We are not from the area but so far all looked really good. But I could not believe it what a shambles, young girl behind the bar with sun glasses served us, loud women sat on table doing paperwork shouting across the bar. We waited for over 1hr 30 mins. The same girl brought our food over very cold and forgot about our drinks, only to find her outside soaking up the sun smoking a cigarette. We wont be returning, really disappointed. Glad this is not my local!!

This is the same person who gave a bad review of The Farmers Arms at St Brides Major, Bridgend on the day before (18/4/12) and said the owners also owned The Sportsman's Rest where they also had a very bad meal and gave it a 1 star review. Why would someone go back there for a meal the next day?? Some-body's telling porkies.

We had food at Sportsmans Rest and was very un happy ,the meals were cold and we had raw samlon give two us the next day my husband had food poisoning, the atmosphere was bad. The staff was messing around behind the bar and swearing obscene language. I wound never go there again.!

This has got to be the best Sunday pub meal in the U.k! Everything is home made and so tasty that the chef could give Jamie Oliver a run for his money! Our daughter, raves about the chocolate cake. The atmosphere is warm and the pub is set in beautiful grounds. The prices are reasonable and I hate to rave about it any more in case my review brings in an even bigger crowd!
